"The Hungry Catepillar"! I still love the drawings and the story is very cute. I'm going to get a copy soon for my new nephew.
When I was older, I loved "Bridge to Terabithia". I enjoyed the fantasy aspect of kids having their own secret domain, and the sad part was shocking as a kid.
The Chronicles of Narnia were favorites too. My fourth grade teacher read them out loud do us.

Anything by Dr. Suess! My mother loved Dr. Suess as much as I did so it was so much fun when she read him to me! When I got a little bit older I loved the Judy Blume's and all the S.E. Hinton books (The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, etc.)

If you can't tell from the picture with this question, my favorite book was Goodnight Moon.
Elizabeth Taylor - Thanks for the reminder/memories of the S.E. Hinton books! I also LOVED those as a pre-teen.

The Secret Garden. I loved the idea of a secret place that nobody knew about and I also liked the idea of the crippled boy becoming healthy. Earlier than that my Mother told us stories she made up and I liked the Little Golden Books.

The first favorite I can remember is Sophie & Gussie, about two squirrel friends -- read it so often it literally fell apart.
When I was a little older my mom bought me Mandy by Julie (Andrews) Edwards, another I read multiple times, and one I still have today.
And then there was the entire Trixie Belden series....
