I just want to quickly apologize for missing more Question days than usual lately!! Since I've went full-time with my own business, there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day...lol. Funny, I somehow thought this was going to be easier than trying to do it part-time - silly me :)
Anyway, please bear with me and thanks to all those sticking it out with my hit or miss postings!!
To answer today's question:
I balance my checkbook once I start getting utility disconnects in the mail. I know that sounds horrible, but I am awful at paying bills. Even if I have the money for them, I just can't stand the whole process of having to do it. I suppose it's self-defeating and would probably be much easier if I just dealt with it as them come in instead. So, basically my checkbook gets balanced when I need to know if i have any money. I rely heavily on my bank's online checking feature to mark off all my transactions. The online account does make things a bit better.

I refuse to answer this question on the grounds that I will just look stupid and I would be judged....so keep asking but not answering this one.....;)

I do it the old fashioned way. Always once a month, about a week before pay day and all my bills are due. Then I keep up on it about once a week or so to make sure I don't run out of money. I usually only have a few dollars left at the end of the month. I have to keep a close eye on it, since I live so close to the penny!

i quit balancing my checkbook a long time ago. i just check my account on line once (or more) a day to be sure nothing will lead to an overdraft. i pay most of my bills on line, so i rarely write checks. sometimes i don't even know where my check book is!
and sublime, ask when you can - we understand it's the beginning of a new page in your life :)

I make my husband be in charge of the finances. It's just easier for me when he says "This is how much we have for groceries and this is how much we have for extra stuff for the kids" and such. He mostly uses the online banking to check the accuracy of the checkbook, I think. I know I need to know this stuff, but I take care of so many other things, I don't want to bother with the finances.

Call me Mr. Anal Retentive!
I balance it weekly, right after I write the checks for my bills that week.
...Not that there's THAT much to balance...

My wife is the keeper of the books; on days when I do the weekly shopping I will balance as I go, using the calculator in my phone because sometimes we cut it close...
Glad your business is busy!

I hang on for dear life!!!! Actually I only use the online feature. I find it's always the most up-to-date and since I seem to live minute by minute, it works best for me.

Ha! ME balance a chequebook! Noooooo. Well mainly because we don't really use them very often in the UK anymore... it is all bank debit here and alot of shops no longer accept cheques.
I am trying to be better at looking over my bank statements though.

I don't balance! I keep track of it online and use my debit card for every freakin' thing under the sun. My bank breaks down my expenses that way and I can see what I've spent on everything and just keep the mental tally during the month - you know, x amount a week on groceries and lunches, x amount at Rite-Aid a month, etc.
I used to do that Sublime - oh! time to pay the electricity because here's a disconnect notice! What changed me was that I let some debt get out of control. Also (and this is really corny) I was watching Suze Orman on PBS and she was saying how women don't have a healthy relationship with their money. It's true - I ignored mine as long as I was able to pay rent, etc...anyway I'm working on the relationship, you could say!
