I actually belong to a fraternity, Phi Kappa Tau, which is strange because I'm not usually a "joiner." I had decided as an undergrad to push my limits and explore things I had previously simply dismissed off the cuff. Also, though I guess it doesn't technically count, I belong to a strange little group of people called physicists - one of the strangest groups you'll ever find.
I'm a total joiner. I don't always follow through with it, but I'll start. Right now I belong to N.O.W., N.A.R.A.L., and D.A.R. Former organizations have included college newspapers, high school newspapers, yearbook staff, service organizations and a sorority. I just can't stop.
i am not technically a joiner...but i am a member of the Gay/Straight Alliance at the college i attend...and i am a volunteer with Planned Parenthood...
well, if you count things like sierra club and planned parenthood and natrual resource defense council and the aspca and the humane society, then yeah, i'm a member...but i really don't do anything with or for these affiliations except send them my money in support of their valuable work...ciao...
in college i was in alpha delta pi, one of four national sororities on my campus. i was also in the communication studies honor's society lambda pi eta, but was inducted 3 days before i graduated. other than that i dabbled in a few other college campus groups and nothing else stuck. since graduation i haven't joined anything but a yoga class...
I was not a joiner up until this past two years. Now I belong to my son's cooperative serving on the schools board of trustees. It's way way more work than I feel like doing and frankly, I'm looking forward to it being over.
But I do enjoy the group dynamics of joining stuff, so I'd join something else in the future. Something that didn't feel like a part time job.
I can not say that I belong to any organizations. I am not a joiner. I used to belong to the Acadamy of American Poets, but I'm cheap and I didn't want to pay the dues. I belong to the International High IQ Society, but I am not active. I think once my kids get older I'd like to join a writers group.
I don't join groups either. I'm essentially a loner and like it that way. That's not to say I don't enjoy being with people, I do, but I don't often fit in, so I'm happy to be on the fringes. Also, I find when I have joined a group I "give" too much emotionally and invest too much time and am left with nothing for myself, and I find that the more one gives, the more one is expected to give. So I prefer to do the giving on my terms in my way. Sounds selfish, but I'm not, honestly....!
I'm an Alpha Xi Delta Alumna, and not the type one would usually associate with a sorority--very quiet and more of an introvert. In HS I was much more involved than I am now or was in college--forensics, orchestra, arts mag, yearbook, writing club, Beta Club, AFS, theater (backstage).
In college there was my sorority, arts mag, yearbook. Since college I've been involved in a few writing groups and conferences, but not much else. I have a hard time talking with people I don't know. Somehow that's much easier to do on the Net.
I used to be a joiner and was in a bunch of clubs in High School. In college I joined Mu Kappa Tau which was the professional honarary marketing society.
Nowadays it seems like if you want to join a group, it will cost you. So I'm waiting till I get one of them jobs and make some money. But I'm thinking of Move-On, ACLU, NARAL, just to name a few.
